The capillaries of the interstitial tissue are moderately dilated and filled with
blood. The walls of the alveolar septa, particularly in the subpleural regions, are
slightly to moderately thickened by collagen fibrils, fibroblasts-.and histiocytes.
This is best seen in LC31. In the regions beyond these the alveolar septa are torn
to leave enlarged air sacs. Lying in the lumens of many of the alveoli are accumulations
of serum, red blood cells and alveolar phagocytes. Some of the alveolar phagocytes
contain brown granular pigment. Present within the lung are several foci of varying
size which are red granular in appearance (necrosis). Within these areas the former
structure of an alveolar filling process is still discernible: Within the alveolar
filling process are the ghost forms of red blood cells, intact red blood cells '
an&nuclear fragments. Nuclear fragments are also present within the walls of the
alveolar septa. In the areas around these zones the alveoli contain neutrophils,
red blood cells and alveolar phagocytes. Some of the bronchi contain accumulations
of neutrophils and serum. Branches of the.;pulmonary arterioles and pulmonary arteries
contain emboli aahich are composed of red blood cells predominately, neutrophils and
mononuclear cells. The bronchi are lined by tall columnar epithelial cells and show
a slight to moderate increase in the number of basal cells, the nuclei of which vary
slightly to moderately in size, shape and staining character. Branches of the
pulmonary arterioles are slightly thickened by pink hyaline material. Branches of the
pulmonary arteries are of average thickness. The overlying pleura is slightly to

The elastica van Gieson stain shows the elastic.fibers intact at the pleuropulmonary
junction. The overlying pleura is slightly to moderately thickened by an increase of
connective tissue. The elastic framework of the lung parenchyma is intact. It is
also intact in the region of the infarct. The internal elastic lamina of the arteries
