Thiis i s a dog i n the Envi ro Control Seri es (PP101Group - Code 67 ,. The dog smoked for
202 days with a total of 2,638 cigarettes smoked. The changes inithe lungs and
tracheobronchial tree which are secondary to cigarette smoking ore those of a oul!monlo-v
fibrosis and:emnhysema of a slight to moderate d'egree. The basal cell hyperplasi'a
wi,thin the tracheobronchiall tree is of a slight degree with sllirliht to moderate atypilsm.
In most instances the changes are of a slight degree; in only si!+all focal areas are
the changes of a slilght to moderate degree. When compared~ wiith the first and _
second studies with the dogs having died after 200.days, the changes in this dog are far
less than those in the dogs in the previous study. Again the important question arises
as to whether thP difference between the lesser chanqes in this dog compared to the
earlier series are due to, the tar and nicotine content of the cigarette or due chiefly
to the d'ifference in the smoki'ng,method~used in different groups.
