COMMENT
This dog was in thu Group 67(PMO)series. This is part of the Enviro Control Series.
The dog had smoked for a period of 455 days with a total of 5,688 cigarettes smoked.
The dog was found deadiin his cage. The findings in this dog are those of a mura,l
thrombus in the right auricular appendage. The thrombus is of recent origin'. Showers
of emboli broke off fromithe thrombus in the right auricular appendage and are present
in branches of the pulmonary arterioles and arteries of all lobes of the lungs.
Subseq, uent to the embol+i, thrombi developed in six of the seven lobes. The infarcts
are of recent origin as seen by the early necrosis i'n which the former structure
of the a1veolar fillingiprocess andi the ghost forms of the alveolar septa are still
di:scerniible. Also an indi, cation of the early infarcts is the lack of repair present
at the periphery of these necrotic zones. As a result of the infarction there also,
developed'an acute bronchitis and bronchopneumonia within the lung parenchyma
surrounding the .nfarcted zones.
As to the relationship to cigarette smoking the changes of pulmonary fibrosis and~
emphysema and the basal cell hyperplasia with atypism were of a sl'ight to moderate
degree. Again when compared with the first and second studies the findings in this
case are definitely less.
