(4) Studies relating to leaf tobacco, our basic raw materiall and
greatest element of cost, still go on. To assist our leaf buying organization,
a pilot scale arrangement was initiated in 1955, whereby leaf tobacco samples
were obtained directly from farns, analyzed, and a preview of the general quality
of the crop given to our buyers prior to sale.
Changes in leaf, as a result of aging, are still being intensively
studied. Proper aging greatly increases the value of leaf for manufacturing
purposes, yet for economi.cal reasons it is desirable to keep inventories to a
miniraum.
As our knowledge of leaf tobacco quality is increased, more inte3li-
gent blending is made possible.
