Dr. H. B. Parmele, Vice President

Dear Dr. Parmele:
Before leaving on vacation I should like to report to you briefly on the
various experiments now under way.
1) Long-term painting experiment C-131R. We are enclosing three graphs
which show that a) the percentage of papillomas in mice being painted with
tar B2 have now reached 95%, and we should like to suggest that this group
be now sacrificed. b) From the curves of B2 and B10 we may conclude
that there is an active co-carcinogen in this material, since the effect of
increasing the dose was to cause the tumors to appear sooner without a
change in the slope of the curve of the cumulative tumor incidence. c) The
comparison between the Pall Mall, Kent and Winston tars has reached a
point between 50 and 70% of papillomas, and we should like to suggest that
this be continued until the middle of September, at which time this experiment
should be discussed between us. The same is true of the curves on the K75
and K12 tars.
2) Experiment C-151 (DDD). I should like to report that the experiment is
proceeding as planned, and injections have been made July 15th.

3) C-140R, a co-carcinogen skin painting study proceeded well. On July 8th
an accident due to collapse of a cage rack beyond our control occurred which
'N reduced the population of groups 24, 25 and 26 and their subgroups. In some
^
`~ of these groups this reduction was only 30% but in others the loss was greater.
In order to remedy this situation we immediately instituted new groups 24, 25
and 26 and corresponding subgroups, which was possible because we were
able to order mice of the same sex and age as those originally used, and O
we shall add these groups to the experiment in approximately two weeks. ~
It should be noted that the new groups include new simultaneous positive Ir
and negative control groups. ~

This will mean for some groups which were involved in the accident
there will be considerably more animals than originally planned and for
others the number will be at least that originally planned. The final results
will be delayed by approximately eight weeks, a lag period which we shall
carry at our own expense.
C-146 Polonium experiment. Following up on Dr. Kelley's memorandum
I should like to report that with the smoking terminated, the counting
is proceeding satisfactorily and as scheduled. During my absence during
the month of August Dr. Bernfeld will be in full charge of all Lorillard
experiments and will keep close supervision of all matters concerned. He
is aware of the fact that you like to be currently informed on the studies
on DDD and will let you know if anything striking will happen.
Sincerely yours,
FH=,bhn Freddy Hor-Aurger, M. D.
