Henry Microbiological Associates 5122'1 River Road B'ethesda, MD' 2'0'8'16 Dear Dr. Henry: .W We recently reviewed MA Experi:ment Nb. I-1725.-0013': Comparative Tbxicity of'T'est Cigarette Smoke with Reference Cigarette Smoke After Inhalation in Mice, and have the following comments and questions: 1. Page 11, paragraph 2: The text states that all mice h1ad recovered after 24 hours. This is misleading since one died. , Tables 5(A-G)' : What does "X" mean?' Is it different from Table 5B: "'Breath holding,"' one of the listed Observations During,Exposure, is retyped under "'other.,"' How many animals showed this?' . Dr. Carol J. Henry August 24, 1982' Page 2' In Tables 2D,, 3D, and 5D, two different animal numbers are listed beside Percent COHb data. The tables do not indicate which animal numbers correspond' to Day 7.or 15 data, or why two animalls were used. We would like this information to bee included with the appropriate tables. 4. Table 8 does not containia reference "a" to correspond'with footnote °la"lat the bottom. 5. On p. 5, line 2'-3: the word "of'" is repeated. (This also was noted in 1725.00i8'). . .P'age 13, paragraph 1: line '4 should read "'greater than the sham-exposed group."' We also reviewed MA Experiment No. I-1725.008': Toxicity of Reference Cigarette Smoke After Inhalation in Rats Following a 14-Day Smoke-Adaptation P'eriod, and have these comments: Group 3 in three places: paragraph 4, lines 8' and 9', andd paragraph 5, line 11. On p. 11; the test erroneously refers to Group 2' instead of On Table 2A, 5/18/8'2' should be the final date of the adaptat- ioniphase. Tables 3D, SD, and 6D have,.two animal numbers beside Day 7 and Day 15 COHb data. Whichianimals correspond' to the data, and' why were two different animals used? (Same comment in previous section),. We also reviewed MA Experiment No. T-1725.009': Acute Toxicity of Cambridge Filtered Reference Cigarette Smoke (Gas Phasel After Inhalation in Mice. On p. 11, paragraph 6, the average COHb level for group 3' should be 391.9', not 39.3. If you have any questions, please feel free to call. nnie Jf./-Stone, Ph.D., D.A.B.T. CJlS': f r
