Abstract

This 1973 letter from the Brown & Williamson tobacco company relates B&W's discovery that Philip Morris was using tobacco in its cigarettes that was "adnormally high in nicotine content." The letter is written to B&W's parent corporation, British-American Tobacco Company.

A 1974 B&W chemical examination report that further details this study (Start Bates No. 570305198) reports that "most reconstituted tobaccos gain significantly in nicotine content during cigarette manufacture. This nicotine transfer is massive for the major reconstituted tobacco in Philip Morris cigarette products."

Notes

Note the word used to describe the elevated levels of nicotine in PM products is "adnormally" rather than "abnormally." I looked this word up in three dictionaries, including a Webster's unabridged dictionary, and did not find this word listed in any of them. It may be either a spelling error or a spelling peculiar to British English.

Mr. A.R. Counsins Group Research and Development Centre British-American Tobacco Company, Ltd. Regent's Park Road Millbrook Southampton, ENGLAND

Tony,

Than you for your letter of 29 June expressing interest in our findings that Philip Morris reconstituted tobacco is adnormally high in nicotine content. By now you should have Bob Johnson's report, BW No. 73-20, bringing you up to date on our efforts.

Your results for Lebanese Marlboro LSFT indicate that the use of the high nicotine reconstituted tobacco is not peculiar to the U.S. Do you know if the reconstituted tobacco was produced in the U.S. by PM?

We are looking forward to your findings with other PM products from around the world. The variations in products you will encounter may allow mbetter definition of how and why PM is making cigarettes this way.

Sincerely,

J.S. Esterle
