Abstract
This Philip Morris document (estimated date 1972) is a proposal to organize a scientific conference to discuss the gratification and benefits of cigarette smoking. The purpose of the conference was to "provide the scientific facts for a pro-cigarette public relations campaign." Eminent scientists would be invited to attend, and the conference was to be held in the middle of January, 1972 on the Island of St. Martin in the French Antilles. Invited scientists woulf be told "Philip Morris will pay all of your expenses." The document also states, "Conference proceedings to be published as a contribution to science."
PM's rationale for such a conference was:
"Scientists have been abundantly financed for the study of the adverse effects of smoking upon physical health. Scientists have not been supported for the study of the positive effects of smoking upon psychological well-being. Thus the public is hearing only why they should not smoke; they hear nothing in defense of smoking. The smoker is not being told that there are sound, scientific explanations for the satisfaction that he knows he gets from his cigarette. The conference will provide authoritative statements in support of smoking. "
Philip Morris planned this conference 8 years after the U.S. Surgeon General issued its first report definitively linked smoking with disease.

CONFERENCE TOPIC
The Gratification of Cigarette Smoking
PURPOSES
Scientific: To stimulate scientists to a renewed study of the positive, rewarding aspects of cigarette smoking.
Corporate: To provide the scientific facts for a pro-cigarette public relations campaign.
PARTICIPANTS
Twenty prominent scientists from the life, behavioral and social sciences (see roster of invitees).
PLANS
Eminent spokesmen of the represented disciplines will present papers for discussion. Conference proceedings to be published as a contribution to science.
RATIONALE
Scientists have been abundantly financed for the study of the adverse effects of smoking upon physical health. Scientists have not been supported for the study of the positive effecfts of smoking upon psychological well-being. Thus the public is hearing only why they should not smoke; they hear nothing in defense of smoking.
The smoker is not being told that there are sound, scientific explanations for the satisfaction that he knows he gets from his cigarette. The conference will provide authoritative statements in support of smoking. These statements can become the basis for a pro-cigarette public relations campaign.

I 'am plleased to announce that the Council for Tobacco.
Research is sponsoring al scientific conference on the topic,
"Motiivati'onal Miechani sms of Ci'garette Simoki ng ."'
It iis a truismithat cigarette smoking is a gratifyiing,
act, but the nature of'the reward alssociated with the act is
by no means clear. The aim of the conference is to stimulate
fresh, multiidiscipllinary thought on a question which over the
years has generated a 1ot of heat aind data but not much light.
The plan is to bring together prominent minds from the life,
behavioral andisociial sciences with the following objectives:
1) To propose and dliiscuss hypotheses and
theoretical modells pertinent to the topic
2) Toltest the f'i t of these conceptual i'zati onis
tolthe emipi ri call data i n the 1 i terature
To consider the results of recent
unpubl!i shed studliies.
To give impetus and direction tolfolilow-up
research.
We halve gotten a strong endorsement of the topic and
agreement to participate iin the conference from a number of
key researchers, including Paul Lazarsfelid of'Columbli'a
University, Hans Selye from the University of Montreal,
Larry Stein from Wyeth Laboratories, and'Murray Jarvik from
the Albert Einstein SchooT of' Medicine and Surgery. Con -
vincedlfrom thiis response that the idea iis sound, we have
proceeded to d'raw,up a list of an additional twenty investi-
gators whom we feel could make a genuine contribution blecaiuse
of the relevance of their expertfse to the probl!em and/or
because their publlished work has revealed competent interest
inithe subject.
