RJO/RAI46M 9th September, 1983 THE ~DITION OF SUGAR AND SOLUTIONS OF Ca(Oil)? IN SUGAR TO CIGARETTE PAPER INTROOUCTION I As part of our Investigation to reduce statntng of cigarettes using the 041 and 143-1-1 paper one of the materials tried was sugar. This was added to the 143-1-1 paper at various loadtngs from approxtmmtely 2-15 9m-2 (i.e. about 5-30% of the paper weight). It was found that the staining was reduced for sugar additions of from 5-10% but that at the higher additions no reduction was obtained. Various sugars were tried without any further success. ~l,~ L:#,..r v/'~ ~:.~,. ~. -I P It has been found that a Ca(OH)2 filled cigarette paper gives a reduced vtstble sidestream smoke. Also in a 35I sugar solution at 25"C, 10ol g CaO/ZO0 cm3 can be dissolved which is nearly 100 times the solubility of lime in distilled water. Thus the effect of adding a solution of Ca(OH)2 in sugar to the 041 and 143-I-I paper respectively on cigarette staining and sldestream TPM emission was examined. Tripotassiu, citrate was included in some of the solutions added to the paper to improve cigarette ash characteristics and the burning properties of the paper. A conventional paper was included in these tests (556N1). EXPERIMENTAL The fomulatton of the aqueous solution used was as follows: o, 35% w/v sugar, 7,S% w/v Ca(OH)2 wlth or wlthou¢ the addition of 5.0% w/v trtpotasstmcttrate. The solution was applied to the paper by brush. Plain cigarettes (70 mm) were made using Blend 42 tobacco and they were smoked in the GR&l)C glass cartridge. • " ~ ~.v.~:~ ~.. 0 0 0 rxJ

-2- RESULTS The principal ftndtngs were as follows, (reference Table 1): . The treatments caused a ]arge reduction tn the air pemeabtlity of all the papers. . . . The opactty of all the papers was reduced. The 556111 (cha]k filled/conventional weight) paper became transparent. Paper staining was generally reduced following the addition of sugar which confirmed earlier findings. [ c (p "7= With the 041 paper the~treatmnt, caused a small change in puff number but a large reduction tn the sidestream TPR mission.and rate relative to the cigarettes made with the-untreated paper, and the treated with ~paper sugar only. Q There was a large increase In J:he ouff number of the cigarettes made using ~ne [q~-l-1 ano b~l papers. The stdestream TPH emission a~nd rate of these cigarettes and their puff numbe~ were about the same as those obtained th~t~ea~d~¢ 041~'~persX[excludlng "(~ 0.~ the 041 with sugar for treatment only). . It was noticed that the cigarettes made wtth treated papers gave a more pleasant and less irritating stdestream aramathan the cigarettes made with untreated papers. Also the taste of the mainstream smoke had changed and seemed to be mtlder than for the cigarettes made wtth the treated papers. 0 0 Co 0 rs~
