SUMMARY OF BAT'S APPROACH TO SMOKING AND SMOKING ISSUES o BAT recognlses the desire of certain people to eliminate smoking, but be,eves that despite the various anti-smoking movements, a substanUal proportion of adults worldwide will continue to smoke. Studies have reported a statistical association between smoking and certain diseases. Many independent scientists and government bodies have said that the association should be considered causal. However, other Independent scientists dispute the causal hypothesis and offer alternative explanations. The question of cause continues, therefore, to be a controversy. Within the framework of the controversy about cause, there are pub, shed scientific conclusions that cigarettes of low tar content give rise to a lower Incidence of certain diseases than the higher "delivery" products which formed the basis of n~ost epidemlological studies to date. Despite the fact that some sclenUsts take the opposite view, certain Government and health authorities have publicly advised consumers to smoke cigarettes with lower smoke deliveries. For this, and perhaps for other reasons, there has been a growing demand worldwide for low delivery products. The tobacco Industry has responded quickly to this changing demand, and to published government advice, by marketing an expanding range of cigarette products - so that each consumer can make his own informed choice of product.
