Dear Pat,
- °.
Doctor A.M. (Alex) Morrison, the Deputy Minister of the
Department of Health and Welfare, in the Canadian Government,
has decided to take a one year sabbatical commencing July
ist, 1981. Durlng this period, he will act in a consulting
capacity with the World Health organization in Geneva.
On July Ist, 1982, Dr. Morrison will return to his current
post with the Canadian Government in Ottawa.
The Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers' Council has worked closely
with Dr. Morrison for several years in the overall area of
smoking and health. Establishing, monitoring and communicating
T & N information to smokers within Canada, a join= government-
industry effort, was one of the more significant accomplishments
undertaken with Dr. Morrison and his department, as was the
movement to lower T & N delivery cigarettes during the past
few years. More recently, we have engaged in wide-ranging
discussions relating to CO, with a view to establishing a
similar measurement and control process.
During a discussion with Dr. Morrison in May, the subject
of Research & Development within B.A.T. was raised. He was
interested, of course, and I took the liberty of suggesting
that a visit to Southampton to see what has been accomplished,
in the area of CO might be worthwhile.
If you feel this could be arranged, please let me know and
in due course, I will forward Dr. Morrison's address and
telephone number ln Geneva, so that you may contact him directly
=o set up a mutually convenient':time. With'~ind regards,
Sincerely,
• , o ,; ?
c.c. Dr. A.M. Morrison
