INSERTION DEPTH STUDY ON SWISS CIGARETTES
Abstract
Reports on BAT Suisse study to determine maximum insertion depth of cigarettes by smokers and related lip occlusion of ventilation holes. Finds that average insertion depth among 24 ventilated brands is 12mm, noting that "highly ventilated cigarettes are inserted deeply into the smokers mouth and consequently the ventilation level is reduced during normal human smoking."

INSERTION DEPTH STUDY ON SWISS CIGARETTES
The depth of insertion of a cigarette between the lips is one way
whereby a smoker may, consciously or unconsciously, influence the
degree of ventilation of ventilated cigarettes. This is a well known
aspect of smoking behaviour and several authors referred to the
interference with lips on ventilated cigarettes well before channel
ventilated cigarettes entered the market.
B.A.T. (SUISSE) decided in 1984 to carry out a large survey on the
Swiss Market to determine the maximum insertion depth of cigarettes
into a smoker's mouth in order to find out whether ventilation
systems are blocked by smokers lips and if the blocking of
ventilation occurs to see whether this is dependent of cigarette
design or filter type.
Principle of method used :
The imprint of smoker's lips is made visible via the oc - amylase of
saliva. The amylase is transferred from the tipping paper onto a wet,
starch impregnated, strip of silica gel on aluminium foil. After
incubation for 10 - 20 minutes at 37 o C, the strip is sprayed with
iodine solution. White areas on a blue background indicate the
position of the lips on the tipping paper.
Results :
The arithmetic average of insertion depth on 24 ventilated brands is
12 mm covering a range from 4 to 25 mm. Analysis of individual brands
clearly indicates that highly ventilated cigarettes are inserted
deeply into the smokers mouth and consequently the ventilation level
is reduced during normal human smoking. N
