Filter Ventilation and Design
COMPENSATION
Abstract
Opines that discussions concerning smoker compensation need to be taken a step further than planned. Notes suggestion that "it should now be possible to design a number of cigarettes which would have the same smoking machine delivery but different deliveries to the compensating smoker...with a knowledge of the smoker's response to such factors as pressure drop, ventilation, iritation, impact, nicotine delivery, etc."

COMPENSATION
As you know, I have been concerned that the discussions on
compensation and cigarette design should be taken a stage further
that outlined in Dr. Thornton's recent note.
I did, therefore, take the opportunity to ~r my opinions with
Jeremy Wood and Ian Ayres yesterday. They have aEreed that it
should now be possible to design a number of cigarettes which would
have the s_-~e smoking machine delivery bu~ e~t~'erent de]/vertes to
the compensattuE ~moker. Broadly speaking, this could be achieved
by developinE cigarettes with a knowledge of the smoker's response
to such factors as pressure drop, ventt]-tiono trrttatlon, Line, act,
nicotine delivery, etc.
