Abstract

Reports on results of in vivo air dilution tests on Kool Ultra Lights which use the same Actron filter as Barclay cigarettes. Notes that previous test on Barclay indicated that the Actron filter produces "dramatic" reduction in air dilution when smoked by humans versus FTC machines, resulting in skewed delivery readings. Finds that Kool Ultra Lights produce similar results. Includes data and study questionnaire.

PHJLJP' N110RRIS U. S. A. I NTER'-OFF I CE CORR'ESP0NDEN!CE R'ICHHOiNID, YIROIHIA' To: Mr. W. Claflin Date: April 25„ 19'831 From: Ms. J. Jones Subject: • Kool Ultra Lights In Vivo Air DsilutioniTest In, response to the increased consumer demand for low tar, low nicotine cigarettes, cigarette manufacturers have introduced brands with ai'r dilution filtration systems. These cigarette fiil!temenable air to be drawn into the cigarette through small dilution holes on the ci'rcumference of the filter. The incoming air .decreases the proportion of smoke delivered to the smoker, thereby lowering the tar delivery. Brown and Wi'lliamson Tobacco Corporation has introducedia patentediActron filter with four'ai'r channels running along the length of the filter. In cigarettes such as Barclay which employ the Actron filter, the air coming in through the di'1!ution holes passes along these air channels and then mixes with smoke after leaving the cigarette. In tests using, the Federal Trade Commission's smoking simulation machine, the Actron filter's channels remain open. As a result Barclay regi'sters a l mg tar rating. During human smoking, however, the channels become at least partially blocked by the lips, allowing, more concentrated smoke to enter, the mouth (Tabak-Journal International, 1982). During January of 1982 a study was conduetedl by the United States Testing, Company, Inc. to measure the in vivo air dilution of ventilated cigarettes. The brands selected were medium and highly diluted cigarettes, the smoker's~own~ brand', and Barcllay with the Actron filter. These cigarettes were tested under both lit and unlit puffing conditions and were tested! with and without alplasticc mouthpiece. The plastic tip was used to prevent the lips from bliocking, the dilution channels„ and would thereby represent the FTC smoking test conditi'ons'. The results clearly d6monstrated that the dilution of Barclay is dramatically reduced when it is puffed without the plastic tip, under both lit andi unli't smoking conditiions. This substantial change in dilution does not occur inn cigarettes not employing the Actron filiter. Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation has recently introduced a second brand employing the Actron filter--Kool Ultra Lights. The question to be adldressed here is whether the results obtai'nedlin the inivivo air di'lution study on Barclay are replicated on the Kool Ultra Lights 85mm and 100mm ciigarettes. The test protocol for the present study was similar to that used by United States Testing,Company, Inc., as described in their February, 1982 report. We have outlined our general test procedure for comparison with the USTC protocol; however, for dletails regardiing, instrumentation and specific machine operation, ref er to the USTC February report. Page 2 METHOD Respondents. S bjects were recruited from the Prod'uct Opinion Laboratory mail panel of menthol smokers living in the Richmond area. The smokers were contactedy by telephone several days before the test and were screened for eligibility to partici'pate according,to their responses to questions on the screemer (see Appendix 1). Respondents qualified for participati'on if'theys 1) did not have advertising agency„ marketing, research, or tobacco manufacturer affiliation 2) had not participated in any marketing research study in three months prior tolthe test date had not participated in any marketing research study concerning cigarettes in the previous year 4) currently smoked a menthol cigarette as their regular brand' 5) usually smoked! more than one half'pack of cigarettes per day (at least 10 cigarettes). Eligible respondents who were wi'lling,to participate were assigned a date and time to report to the test facility. Fifty-one menthol fi'ltered cigarette smokers„ 2'8'females and 23 males,: participated in the test. Twenty-five of the subjects smoked an 85mm cigarette as their usual brand and 2'61subjects regularly smoked a 100-120mm brand,. The brand representation of the 51 respondents grouped by Federal Trade Commission delivery level appears in Table 1. All 51 subjeets participated in both the unlit andl lit cigarette tests.. Page 4 In addition to the four cigarettes selected for having Actron filters, theree were two brands of' similar d;eliivery characteristi'cs which utilize the conventionall filtration system (Carlton Menthol 85 and Mieri't Ultra Lights. Mentliol 10'0). Zfie Kool Lights brand was selected as a Brown and Williamson brand employi'ng the conventional f'ilter for mediunm air diLution. Apparatus Measurement of the afir dilution of cigarettes under human smoking, conditions was achieved by using the Puff'Parameter Analyzer (PPA). This instrument gives immediate digi'tal display and printout of the smoker's puff characteristics onn each i'ndividual puff'. The puff parameters recorded on the PPA are: 1) total puff volume (cc)'„ 2) percent di'1'ution, 3) rod'flow rate (ce/min), 4') dilution flow rate (ccfmin), 5') total flow rate (ec/'min), and 6) puff duratiion (sec). The apparatus was selected because it makes highly accurate measures of thee percent dilutiion of'a cigarette being smokedl by the human smoker. From: the viewpoint of the smoker the apparatus consisted of a glass cigarette holder, a d'ental dam, a glass chamber, and tubing which led to the PPA. Sinokers could nox see the digital displiay panell of the instrument. Procedure Testing took place in: a large Community Room located in the rear of a Richmond shoppi'ng malll (Cloverleaf Mall). When subjects reported to to the test site, they were permi'tted' to participate onLy if they brought a pack of their ownn brand. This requirement enabled verif'ication, of the regular brand andl proviided us wi'th cigarettes for testing, the smoker''s brand. Each smoker was given: a secondary screener (see Appendix 2) upon reporting to the tesC location' and was aissinned to one of the two PPAs. Calibratiion. An instrumentation check was made before testtting each subject. The PPA was reset and clean glassware was connected. Test Protocol. The procedure for testing, each subject was as follows: 1) Test Familiarization Puffs. Each subjject was asked to take three dry puffs (unlit) on an own brand cigarette in the same way that "you wouldlnormally puff on a lit cigarette."' The familiiarization puffs were taken without a tip and' the cigarette was not attached to the PPA. The cigarette was then: d'iscardedi. ('fhe verifi'cation test of diluti'on employed in: the original USTC'test procedure was omitted in the present test protocol.)
Page 5: zkk44e00 Log in for more options!
Page 5 2) Unlit Test. The order of presentation of the test cigarettess always began with the smoker's own brand', then proceeded according to a random order for the other four brands. The test cigarette was insertedl rod first into the holder, with dilution holes totally inside the glassware. The dental dam was checked for a complete seal and the holder was secured in the glass chamber. The respondent was then handledthe assembled apparatus. Each cigarette was puffed three times with a tip foLliowedy by three times without altip;. The positioning of' the.rod in the holder was checked after the tip was detached before proceeding with the untipped test. If a puff registered as inaalid on the digital display (caused by excessive movement of the tubing, and glass chamber), the data represented on the printout were marked out and the subject was requested to take another puff. Thee cigarette was diiscarded after the unlit test andla new rod was inserted for the lit test. 31) Lit Test. A tip was placed on the cigarette, which the smoker then lit. The o.perator inserted the rod into the glass chamber. Two puffs were taken with the tipy followed by two puffs with the tip off. If the cigarette had' burned too cl'.ose tolthe dental dam before four valid lit puffs were collected, the entire lit procedure of'tipped then untipped puffing, was repeated for that brand. Smoke was blown out of the glass chamber by a compressed air cylinder after each puff. The randomlorder of presentation for each subject was the same for the lit test as for the unlit test, with;the own-brand always the first cigarette tested. Therefore, for each brand the printout would show data from three unlit tipped puffs followed by three unlit untipped1puffs,, then two lit tipped puffs and finally two li't untipped puffs. All six unlit puffs were taken.from the same rod and all four lit puffs were taken from a second rod. The next brand was then introducedl. Individual cigarettes were not brand-disguised!; however, the jars containing, the cigarettes were coded to minimize the subject"s brand identification. The brands of cigarettes testediwere not disclosed to the respondents, and they remained naive as to the purpose of the study. The digital display andithe printout of puff data were not seen by the participant. Following the test the data, were screened for invalidi puffs. If'data were complete, the subject was asked to read and sign a participation form (see Appendix 3), was paid $25.0'0, and was thanked'for participating in the study.. Inithe case of invalid puffs, that cigarette was resmoked before the smok.er was dismissed. Data were transcribed from the PPA printout to a data, transfer form (see Appendix 4) in preparationifor entry into the computer for compilation and analyses.

Page 6 RESULTS The mean in vivo air dilution measures for each of the test brands under each conditioniappear in Table 2. The three 85 mm test brands andlthree 100 mm test brands withiconventional filters showed virtually no change in mean percent d:ilution:from tipped to untipped smoking conditions. The Barclay and Kool Ultra LiQhts brands, however, showed a dramatic decrease in air dilution from the tipped to.unti'pped conditions for both unlit and lit cigarette smoking. The d'ecrease inipercent dilution for the Barclay Menthol cilgarette was even.greater than that observed in the USTC test (February, 1982) of the nonmenthol Barclay. As shownin Tab1e 2, the mean percent air dilution for Barclay Menthol and for Kool Ultra Lights under the untipped smoking conditions has been decreased to approximately the di'lution of Kool Lights, a cigarette whichihas an FTC'delivery of about 9 mg tar.
