Abstract

Presents findings from study of 57 POL panelists to determine number of additional puffs on a 100mm cigarette opposed to conventional 85mm cigarette. Reports that 31.6% of smokers recorded five or more puffs per 100mm cigarette. Cautiously suggests that findings "do establish that smokers can obtain a substantial number of additional puffs and that five is not an unrealistic number." Includes data.

A study was undertaken at the request of' the Marketing Department to dietermine how many more puffs a smoker would take on a Benson & Hedges 100 ciigarette reTati've to a conventi'onal 85mm cigarette. Informati'on was previ ously provi ded fromi earlier studies of smok- .f'ng behiavrior 'on 85mm cigarettes. * Extrapolations were performed on ~ ' This study was diesigned, to obtain actual records of the number of add'itional puffs a sample of smokers obtai!ned when smoking 100mm cigarettes. The samplle~,-consisted of 57 Richmond P0L paneli'sts. Each panellist, smoked a B& H 100 and an 851mm cigarette wi'th an eight milnute rest period between cigarettes. A panel'ist was allowed to smoke his own brand if it was an 85mm, cigarette; otherwi'se, hie was given an 85aami Marlboro. The order of cigarette presentation_ was balanced. The i ns tructi ons were as fo11 ow; We are interested' in knowing, whether the Benson & Hiedges 100 cigarettes give you any additional' puffs over the one youi are now smoki ngi. You wi'l 1 smoke the. B' & H and the conventi onal cilgarette one at a time. As you are smoking, record each time you take a puff,, counting thie 1'ighting puff. Please smoke as you normally smoke; feel free to taik, read', etc. Do nott concentrate on your smoking, and smoke each cigarette a far down as you would normall!y smoke. In the sample of 57 smokers, 31.6% recorded five or more puffs, on the B & H 100mm cigarette versus a conventional 85mm cigarette. The actual number of additional puffs obtained by eachisubject appears in Table I. These results are submitted advisedly in view of the special ci'rcumstances under which the smoking behavior occurred. They nevertheless do establlish that smokers can obtain a substantial number of adidli'tional puffs and that five is not an, unrealistic N number. O /nn copy to W!. L. Diu n n
