ffi:RALD EgINtZ1tER Los Angeles, California June 28, 1964 FaBe 38 Cigaret Edict The ruling of the Federal Trade Commission requiring cigaret manufacturers to state clearly on every package and in all advertising that • cigaret smoking is dangerqus and may cause death, strikes us as bureaucratic Big Daddyism. It rests on two assumptions that we find .repellent wherever they are encountered. They are (1) that Americans are not capable of determining as adults and individuals, and on the basis of judging available evidence, whether a practice is good or bad, and (2) that there- fore the Government has not only the right but the obligation to make the determination for them. By the same reasoning the Government should require: Warning stickers on bath- tubs. Ditto on drivers' licenses: Ditto on mountain climb- in~ and football equipment, sk~s, bobsleds, racing cars, and even tennis rackets. Ditto on bottles of liquor. And ditto and ditto and ditto. Big Daddy has spoken, but he hasn't had the last word. The tobacco i n d u s t r y is going to fight the ruling, as it should. JOI1B1irAL Elizabeth, Aew Jersey Jiane ?6, 1964 Ill-Advised Cigarette Edict The higbhanded acdod of the Fed- eral Trade Commission in ordering a health a+araing on ciQantte pack lab& is to be tested in court by the ftedustry, and it should be. 9 ttmo is a tibreet to li[e in amok- ing--3be FTC says the labels must bear the c.utionary advice that amok- iog may came death from cancer and otber diseases---then what about the mAay other perih en4ountered in our daily lives?
