Today the tobacco indas- try said the commission had no power to issue that order, and speaking for the cigarette makers was George Allen of the Tobacco Institute, after he testified before a House committee." A LLEN: "It is a most dangerous precedent to require warning statements in cigarette advertising. Would automobile advertising then be required to contain stateraent indicating the possible dan- gers of driving on the public highways? Would aviation companies be obliged to warn their pass -- their prospective passengers of the possibilities of plane crashes? Would the vendors of dairy products be required to wara against possible ill effects of cholesterol?" PROGRAM We ltNr Cronkite - OBS News STATION wCHg-TV and the CBS-TV Network DATE June 25, 1964 - 6:30 PM New York TOBACCO INDUSTRY TO FIGHT FTC'S HFA LTH ORDER CRONKITE: "In testiaony before a Houee Committee today, the tobacco industry promised a court battle if that's the only way to to squelch the Federal Trade Cooemission's order requiring health yarninga on all cigarette packages and advertising. The Chairman of the Board of the B.J. Reynolds' Tobacco Company teatified that the FCC'a rule was unwise, unwarranted and unlawful. He argued the Commission does not have the legal authority to issue the sweeping order. "On Wall Street today, stocks pushed somewhat higher. Once again, though, cigarette stocks, were Laard hit."
