This is a project on Hhich several aeoDle are working and several papers have been published or submitted for publication during the past year. About 10% of Inouse sr.leen cells cultured with Con-A become activated surpressor T cells (STC) and produce a soluble immune response suprressor (SIRS). STC are Ly2, 3+ T cells. Can-A activated Ly 1+T cel~s are i:elper cells to B cells. SIRS is a glyccprotein and is destroyed by trvosin and chymotrvpsin. Fluids w ith SIRS also have a migration inhibitory factor (r+.IF) . SIRS acts on maeroohages -:•hich in turn surpress B cell rroliferation into mature placque forming cells. Mice of several strains were tested for their capacity to produc•e SIRS. All were stisceptible but DBA/1 and C3s/Hej were not susceptible to the supnressive action of SIP:S. These two strains were refractory to the suppressive effects of SIRS to knacroghaaes. Some studies have been done on the ultrastru'ctural characteristics of the macrobhaa_es that have been treated with SIRS. Projection. Dtiring the third year particular attention will be given to the specific cytotoxic lymphocytic resvonse induced by some Con-A activated cells. Insofar as I can evaluate this work it is basic in humoral and cellular immunology and is being well directed. its ralevance to smoking and health might be questioned. W. U. Gardner if WUG:ek
