'I'jn: CocTNcrc. I'oit `l.'ufsecco RESi;nr,rH-U.S.A., INC. July 20; 1976 MEMORANDUM / V TO: Drs. Gardner, Hockett, Jacobson, Sommers, Stone and Wyatt FROM: W.U. Gardner NK11b8b003 SUBJECT: Grant Application 1044. A. Sonia Buist, M.D., University of Oregon, School of Medicine, Portland, Oregon "The role of alphal antitrypsin deficiency as a risk factor in the development of chronic airways obstruction." The program of work is continuing much as planned with some additions. The PiZZ proband and their siblings constitute the original group and they are being placed on lung function tests as they become old enough. A new cohort of PiNZ is proposed and will be followed for lung function changes with time. A test cohort for a prospective study will be the Pi~r, parents of the PiZZ children. Their lung functions will be checked every 2 or 3 years. Controls will be the parents of PiMM children born in the hospital at the same time. Work is continuing on the application and development of methods for lung testing in young children. The PiZZ proband and their siblings will be tested at yearly intervals beginning at the age of 3 years. Information on respiratory diseases will be collected. The adults will be grouped by smoking history with consideration given to respiratory infections such as inf luenza A. Essentially no data was presented but the work had 1'been under way with the ZZ children for only 1/2 year. Longitudinal studies on adults showed 85 to 90% rPt»rn for the second examination. The parents of the ZZs have had lung function tests completed, no effect of smoking. The budget seems reasonable. Concur that this does not need to go in the book. This was site visited by Dr. Lynch and Dr. Jacobson after the SAB meeting at which it was considered and was considered to be most satisfactory. W.U.G. WUG:mb
