T,~ Coupon,. Fo~ To~.~cco R~sE~c~-U.~.A" I~c. MEMORANDUM TO: RCH, WTH, AY P~DM:WUG October 28, 1975 Continuation ADDlicat-ion 891-A. Dr. Georg B. Neurath, Microanalytical Laboratory, Hamburg, West Germany. "Nitrosamines in Tobacco and its Smoke Occurrence, Format_ion and Transfer." I(I I 490 7 The proposal was ~o determine nitz~samines on different t~haoco produc~s and determine the effects of smoking on the n/trosamines. This proposal was presented only in a general way in the application, so it was difficult to determine what and h~wwas to be done. Neura~.h stated ~at ~he rep~ of nitroso nornico~ine in tobaccos made by Hoffman and associates was about three orders higher than those rspoz~csd by others. He concluded t_hat these figures needed confirmation., t.~st environmental conta=Linat_ions of nitrosamines were in the order of 3 billion. Pine's new instrument can dete-~mine p~ levels. Mcstprocedures c~n de~-~oo~ c~--!y n~ !evel~. Neurath himself has not been able to'get sensitive enough me~hods for nit.rcsamines. Pine's new chemo~luminescence method is available for $25,000. NC~ is pres~ably ordering i0 to 15 of them for work on nitrosamines. Neurath has an appoin~men~ with Pine on October 19. Neurath repoz-~ed that Lijinsky ~ad reported a~ Talanin that intestinal ~ra~ bacteria might increase reactions between nitrates and amS_nes. Mention was made of glycsro~--init=ate and nitroglycerine and effects of levels in the l~wer intestinal tra~ and in urine. Neuzath mentioned that the amount of NO Hb might be determined, its relative affini.~y and elution rates relating to CO. Neu~ath reported that Pine had some evidence that NO and amines formed nitrosamines and mostly in the side-s~ream smoke. Conclusion. The carrent proposal was ~ generaland incomplete ~ permit consideration. If a more detailed application was presented, including s~m~ of the items discussed a~ the meet.ing, it c~uld be considered at the next meeting of the Executive Committee or in Maxch by the SAB.
