TIiIi COliNCIL roIt TOImcco RIaI:alecii-U.S.A., INC. October 28, 1975 MEMORANDUM ~ TO: RCH, WTH, AY FRDM: WUG R1i01 349037 SiJ8.7ECT: Continuation Application 891-A. Dr. Georg H. Neurath, Microanalytical Laboratory, Hamburg, West Germany. "Nitrosamines in Tobacco and its Smoke Occurrence, Formation and Transfer." The proposal was to determine nitrosamines on different tobacco products and determine the effects of smoking on the nitrosamines. This proposal was presented only in a general way in the application so it was difficult to determine what and how was to be done. Neurath stated that the report of nitroso nornicotine in tobaccos made by Hoffman and associates was about three orders higher than those reported by others. He concluded that these figures needed confirmation., Most environmental contaminations of nitrosamines were in the order of 3 billion. Fine's new instrument can determine pg levels. Most procedures can detect on_'y ng levelr. Neurath himself has not been able to'get sensitive enough methods for nitrosamines. Fine's new chemoilluminescence method is available for $25,000. NCI is presumably ordering 10 to 15 of them for work on nitrosamines. Neurath has an appointment with Fine on October 19. Neurath reported that Lijinsky had reported at Talanin that intestinal tract bacteria might increase reactions between nitrates and amines. Mention was made of glycerotrinitrate and nitroglycerine and effects of levels in the lower intestinal tract and in urine. Neurath mentioned that the amount of NO Hb might be determined, its relative affinity and elution rates relating to CO. Neurath reported that Fine had some evidence that NO and amines formed nitrosamines and mostly in the side-stream smoke. Conclusion. The current proposal was too general and incomplete to permit consideration. If a more detailed application was presented, including some of the items discussed at the meeting, it could be considered at the next meeting of the Executive Committee or in March by the SAB.
