Tlil: COUNCIL FOR TOBACCO RFSCsARC'li-U.S.A., IhC. MEMK)RANDUTI J July ~5~rw 7 3 01 .9 TO: Drs. Ford, Hockett, Jacobson, Lynch, Sommers and Stone FROM: W. U. Gardner SUBJECf: Grant 1136R1. Lars Friberg, M.D., The Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. "Epidemio]ogical Studies on the Swedish Twin Registries." PROGRESS REPORT NO. 4: January 1- June 30, 1979. This report covers the mortality follow-up of the older cohort (born 1901-1925) and the new cohort (born 1926-1958). The mortality analysis is not complete for the younger cohort. 194 deaths occurred from July 1, 1977 to January 1, 1978, 8 among the smoking discordant group. There were no new lung cancers. Although the gross mortality is higher for the light and heavy smokers than among the nonsmokers, particularly for the males, the differences are barely significant. Although the lung cancer deaths were much more prevalent among the smokers than the nonsmokers, the figures are based on 14 lung cancers among the low and high smokers (less than 10 cigarettes and more than 10 cigarettes per day) for the DZs and 4 for the MZs. Among the females the total number of lung cancers is S. The number of persons with cancers other than lung cancers is of interest at this time. Dizygotic , Monozygotic Sex No. of Pairs Low Smoke High Smoke No. of Pairs Low Smoke High Smoke Males 706 29 17 246 5 6 Females 781 15 19 326 14 14 Present Smokers Only Males 486 20 7 167 3 3 Females 621 30 24 251 9 11 Mortality, 1901-1925 population, from cancers other than cancer of the lung by sex, zygosity and high (more than 10 or less than 10 cigarettes daily) or low cigarette consumption at some time during their lives or smoking at the time that they became a statistic. The male dizygotics had more deaths in the low smoking grouns. It is also that the incidence of deaths from suicides and accidents is also higher among the high smoking groups. The number of deaths from suicides was 23, the same as the number from lung cancer and the total deaths from accidents was 35. W. U. Gardner WUG:ek
