V SuSJECT: Application 916. Robert A. Goldstein, M.D., V.A. Hospital, Washington, D.C. "Immunologic Functions of Human Alveolar Macrophages." January 1, 1974 for three years. This will be essentially a clinical investigation. It will include not only pulmonary diseases but hyocrtension, scirrhosis and alcoholism, with or and without pulmonary diseases. The patients at first will be only those who will be bronchi'oscooed because of diagnostic or therapeutic reasons. Comolete histories and clinical work-ups will be done. They will be largely C:.`:'LU and lung infection cases. After therapy and no-smoking periods of 2-3 weeks they will agein be bronchioscoped. In lung cancer patients there will probably only be one lavage. No controls at this time. After lavage skin tests en thr patients will be done - a number of antigens. Venous blood will be collected, PHA treated and tested with 3H thymidine, lymphokinine tested by MIF. Morphological and some histochemical studies will be done on the lung cells. Dr. Danr.enberg at Hopkins, who has done some studies on rabbits, will instruct on the histochemistry. Phagocytosis of pel.ysterene beads will be determined by counts and quantitation of the latex taken up. A number of tests of macrophaoe migration against antigens will be done. Dr. Massaro will assist in these experiments as he has had somo experience with animal work. In general the application gives the impression that the applicants have much exoerience t., acquire in the rather exactina techniques that they propose to use. The biochenical and immunoloaical proposals seem superficial. They plan to use the British MRC chronic bronchitis questionnaire. Goldstein is 7 years post-M.D., 2 of them in the Army. He has a number of papers, mostly on sarcoidosis.
