Gardner SUBJECT: Application 709-CR1. Lucio Severi, M.D., Division of Cancer Research, University of Perugia, Italy. "Identify Agent(s) of Sheep-Lung Adenometosis and Transfer to Rodents." This is an attempt to find C-type virus particles or herpes virus in lung adenamotosis in sheep. The o:te reason for supporting this study is that it can't be done in U.S.A. and, secondly, apparently the group at Perugia want to do it. They get most of their material from Scotland. They have had difficulties getting it to Italy in a viable state. The heavy infaction with fungi c3'eates great proolems of getting good cultures of tumors growing. They have carried a few cultures for a number of transfer generations and put some cells into mice and, interestingly, got two parotid tumors and some mediastinal lymphoma (polyoma?). So far they have identified no C-type virus or no herpes in E.M. They propose to do thrPe new procedures during the cor.ting year: g.s. antigen determination or detection, iododeoxuridine treatrrent to get C-type virus out and reverse transcriptase to add further evidence for RNA virus. They hope to get 8 or 10 sheep with adenomatous this year. They mentioned that Malmquist found herpes in the tumors. The budget reflects the dollar devaluation. This is a bit of an institutional grant. I don't see how this problem and the amount of material could take one-third of the time of four investigators. W.U.G. WIIG : ek
