"The Role of the Mac•rophage in the Immune Response: Effect of Tobacco Products on Macrophage Function." The applicant has just completed about eight months of the suppbrt period. The grant merits support for a continuing year and notice should be given to the need for a smoke inhalation machine early in the second year. The applicant essentially rewrites the application that he submitted last year and*makes references to the progress reoort to bring it up to dat=. Ne is working with rabbit alveolar macrophages and with mouce pe_ritoneal macrophages. He has established a standard reaci.ion of thcse macrophages to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH). He will obtain as well the thymotytes and node lymphocytes from KLH-exposed animals and will study their responses in vitro. He has already prepared anti-macrophage antibodies and developed methods for testing them on macrophages. He shou7d now be about ready to study the effects of smoke exposure on the reactions to his test systems. I cannot be certain whether he will need to expose both mice and rabbits. He is at least using the rabbit alveolar macrophage. This applicant should be visited. Is he using an AHH inducible line of mice?
