New application No. 1034 "Chemical Basis of Tissue Destruction in Obstructive Lw~ Disease" FIi9..staay A previous application (No. 1050) with the same title was denied by the SAB in October 1975. The present application (No. 1094) with a drastically reduced budget request, is a revision of the previous application, eliminating studies relating to nitrogen dioxide and oaone, and focusing on the elastolytic activities of alveolar macrophages and pholymorphonuclear leucocytes in both humans and animals. Re est Application No. 1084 requests $32,359 for the first year of a three year project. Estimates for the second and third years are $34,947 and $37,743, respectiv+ely. Document submitted (attached) Application dated December 31, 1975 (19 pages, including C.V.s of Drs. Turino, Fierer, Handl, and Parshley). Comments 1. Dr. Mandl has previously received sia years' support (1966-1972) from CT8 in this general area for studies entitled: "The Role of Hereditary Elastase Inhibitor Deficiency in the Etiology of Pulmonary Emphysema" and "Elastolytic Breakdown in the Etiology of Pulmonary EaplLvsema" .
