NKER685Q94 TFII: COUNCIL I''OR TOBACf;O RL•'sRARCII-U.S.A., INC. August 8, 1974 MEMORANDUM TO: Drs. Hockett, Liebow, Nordsiek, Sommers and Wyatt FROM: W. U. Gardner SUBJECT: Application 878R2. Paul Hamosh, M.D., Department of Physiology and Hiophysics, and Pulmonary Divisiop, Georgetown University School of Medicine. "The Effect of Smoking on the 'Small AiAways'." This is a request for a third year but the applicant seems to anticipate prolonged support because he mentions starting longitudinal studies to correlate smoking habits with small airway function. The continuation will be largely with young people and high school students using a battery of tests to determine difference between smokers and nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking will be compared with marihuana as a part o° one study. The longitudinal studies will be started using a high school population, a pool of 500. His progress report is brief. He has a number of abstracts of papers presented at different meetings and some papers in process of assembling. This seems to be sane of the best work that we have on lung function and the effects of smoking on it. To date, he has reported no significant or consistent changes in vital functions that can be associated with smoking. W.U.G. WUG:ek
