THE WHITE HOUSE
The President today announced his intention to appoint 18 members to the
newly created National Cancer Advisory Board, as provided for in Public
Law 92-218, the National Cancer Act of 1971. Under the terms of Section 410-B
of the law there are also to be included on the Board five exofficio rnembers:
the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare; the Director of the Office
of Science and Technology; the Director of the National Institutes of Health;
the chiel rneuical oiiicer of tae Veterans Adminiatration (or his designee);
and a medical officer designated by the Secretary of Defense.
Members of the presently existing National Advisory Cancer Council, which is
to be superseded by the Board, will continue to serve on the Board until such
time as their Council appointments shall have expired. The 18 new members
are:
For six year termst
Frank J. Dixon, Chairman of the Biomedical Research Departments
at Scrirps Clinic and Research Foundation, La Jo11a, California.
Formerly, he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pathology
at the University of Pittsburgh. Born in March 19Z0 in St. Paul,
Minnesota, he holds unciergraduate and graduate degrees from the
University of Minnesota.
John R. Hogness, President of the Institute of Medicine of the National
Academy of Sciences, Washington, D. C. Prior to that he was Vice
President for Health Affairs at the University of Washington, 5eattle.
He was born in Oakland, California in June 1922.
Jonathan E. Rhoads, Professor and Chairmaa of the Department of Surgery
at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. A past-Presider.t
of the American Cancer Society, Dr. Rhoads received his A. B. degree
from Haverford College and his M. D. from Johns Hopkins University.
Born in Philadelphia in May 1907, he is a surgeon with vast experience
and knowledge in the treatment of cancer.
Howard E. akipper, Vice President and Director of the Kettering-Aicyer
Laboratory, Southern Research Institute, Birmingham, Alabama. whe:e
he had served as a research scientist since 1964. Dr. Skipper, who
holds the Ph. D. degree, is a biochemist whose research interests center
on the biochemistry of drug mechanisms and on cancer chemotherapy. He
has served as a consultant to the National Cancer Institute in a number of
posts. He was born in Avon Park, Florida in Nt-vember 1915.

Laurance 3. Rockefeller, Chairman of Rockefeller Brothers, New York.
He is a business executive and a well-known philanthropist and conserva-
tionist. Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ]vlemorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Center in New York City since 1960, Mr. Rockefeller was a member
of the National Panel of Consultants on the Conquest of Cancer. He was
born in New York City in May 1910.
W. Clarke Wescoe, President of Winthrop Laboratories, New York City.
7Dr. Wescoa was chancellor of the University of Katnsas before he assumed
his present pusition, and prior top that he served as Dean of the Medical
School at Kansas from 1952 to 1960. Born in A1Jentown, Pennsylvarsa in
May 19Z0, ho holds a B. S. cl~gaww fc,ni M.,hlenberg College and the M. D.
degree from Cornell.
For four year terms:
Harold Amos, Professor of Microbiology and A.olecuiar Genetics at the
Harvard Medical School. He was a Fulbright research fellow at the
Institut Pasteur in France in 1951-52, and has been at Harvard since that
time. He was born in Pennsauken, New Jersey in September 1919, and
has had broad experience in national programs of biomedical science.
Elmer Bobst, Honorary Chairman of the Board, Warner-Lambert
Pharmaceutical Company. Born in December 1884, he has served in
executive positions throughout his business career and has vast experience
in the administration and management of industrial enterprises. He was
a member of the National Advisory Cancer Council from 1953 to 1957, and
served as a member of the National Panel of Consultants on the Conquest of
Cancer. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of the American
C.ancer Society.
didney Farber, Director of Research at the Children's Cancer Research
Foundation in Boston. A distinguished pathologist and pioneer in the drug
treatment of cancer, Dr. Farber was born in Buffalo, New York in
September 1903, and served on the National Advisory Cancer Council during
the years 1953-57, 1962-66 and 1967-71. In addition to numerous honorary
degrees, he received his Iv:. D. from Harvard.
Donald E. Johnson, President and Treasurer of the Advertisers Press,
Flint, Michigan. He was a member of the National Advisory Cancer
(:ouncil, 1953-57, is an honorary life member of the National Board of
Directors, American Cancer aociety. He was born in Flint. Michigan in
January 1903. He holds the B.A. degree from the University of Michigan,
and is an advisor to the .;niversity's Car.cer Iiesearch Institute.

irving M. London, Director of the Harvard-MIT program in Health Sciences
and Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Previously Dr. London
served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of lviedicine at the
Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York City. His undergraduate and
medical education was completed at Harvard. He was born in ivialden,
Massachusetts in July 1918.
Gerald P. Murphy, Since November 1970 Director of the Roswell Park
Memorial Institute, an adjunct of the New York State Department of Health.
He also holds posts in urology, surgery, and biology au Niagara University
and the 6tate University of New York at Buffalo. Born in July 1934, he
received the B. S. degree from seattle University, Washington, and the M. D.
from the University of Washington.
For two year terms:
Mrs. Mary Lasker, Philanthropist and leader in biomedical research and
development through her support of young scientists. She is President oi
the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation which she established in 1942. A
member of the National Advisory Cancer Council in 1954-56 and 1962-66,
she has extensive knowledge of national aspects of the cancer problem.'
Harold P. Rusch, Director of the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research
at the University of Wisconsin Medical Center since 1946. Born in Merill,
Wisconsin in July 1908, he has achieved national recognition for his research
in experimental oncology. Educated at the University of Wisconsin, Dr.
Rusch was a member of the National Advisory Cancer Council from 1954-58,
and subsequently has served in the administration and management of many
National Cancer Institute research panels.
Wendell G. Scott, Clinical Professor of Radiology at the Mallinckrodt
Institute of Radiology, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis,
Missouri, and formerly Assistant Professor of Radiology there. Born in
Boulder, Colorado in July 1905, Dr. Scatt was amono those stimulating
interest in the development of a national cancer program. A past-President
of the American Cancer Society, Dr. Scott is editor of the journal Cancer,
and has gained national recognition as a result of his leadership role in
professional societies.
Frederick seitz, A physicist and President of the Rockefeller University
since 1958. He was also President of the National Academy of Sciences
from 1965 to 1969. Born in 5an Francisco in July 1911, Dr. aeitz holds
the A. B. degree from Stanford University and the Ph. D. in physics from
Princeton University.
Sol Spieqelman, Director of the Institute of Cancer Research at the College
of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York City. The
holder of a Ph. D. degree from the Medical School of Washington University
in St. Louis, he is a biochemist with a world-wide reputation based on
contributions in the field of molecular mechanisms of the replication and
expression of genes. He was born in New York City in December 1914.

James D. Watson, Professor of Biology at Harvard University and Director
of the Cold bpring Harbor Laboratory, Long Island, New York. Born in
Chicago in April 19Z8, he holds the B. 6. degree from the University of
Chicago, and the Ph. D. from Indiana University. A nobel laureate and
teacher of biology at Harvard, Dr. Watson has achaeved world-wide
recognition for his work in molecular biology, bacteriophage reproduction,
structure of the nucleic acids, and protein synthessis.
National Advisory Cancer Council members who vaill serve on the Board
until their current appointments expire are:
Arnold L. Brown, Chairman of the Department of Experimental Pathology,
Mayo Clinic, specializing in experimental and anatomic pathology. Born
in Wooster, Ohio in 1926 he received his M.D. deg;ree at the Medicai.
College of Virginia in 1949, did postgraduate stud3r at the University of
Minnesota beginning in 1959, and was named assistant professor there in
1963. His term on the Council expires September 30, 1974.
James S. Gilmore, Jr., President of Gilmore Broadcasting Corporation,
Kalamazoo, Michigan. A communications specialist heading a number of
radio and televisiar i:tat:uns, an advertising agency and an automobile
dealership, he was born in Kalamazoo in 19Z6. His membership on the
Council extends to September t0, 1974.
John R. Hartmann, Director oi the Hematology and Oncology Divison at the
Children's Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center. Seattle, Washington.
He is a specialist in pediatric hematology. He has been associated with the
University of Washington since 1955, and is presently clinical professor of
pediatrics. He will leave the Board in 6eptember of this year.
Leon O. Jacobson, Dean of the Division of Biological bciences, the Pritzker
School of yiedicine at the University of Chicago. Dr. Jacobson is known for
his research on blood formation, diseases of the blood, and the use of
radioisotopes in the treatment of cancers of the F-lc+od-forming tissues. He
has been associated with the University since receiving his degree there in
1939. His term on the Council expires September 30, 1972.
fKenneth L. Krabbenhoft, Professor and Chairman, Department of Radiology
Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, and Chief of Radiology.
Detroit General Hospital. He received his Bachelor's and M. D. degrees
from the State University of Iowa. A consultant in radiology at a number of
hospitals, Dr. Krabbenhoft was born in January 19Z3 at 5abula, Iowa.
His term on the Board will come to an end .ieptembcr 30, 1973.

William W. Shingleton, Professor and Chief of the Division of General
Surgery, Duke University Medical Center, Durhain, North Carolina.
Dr. bhingleton is known for his research in gastrointestinal disease,
especially pancreatic, intestinal, and poat-gastredomy problems; and
In cancer chemotherapy, especially systemic and regional perfusion of
drugs. He ieceived the A. B. degree from Atlantic Christian College,
Wilson, North Carolina, and the M. D. from Wake Forest College. His
appointment ends September 30, 1973.
Philippe Shubik, Director of the Eppley Institute for Research into Cancer,
University of Nebraska, Omaha. Dr. Shubik is a noted authority on
chemical causes of cancer and has published widely on many aspects of
this research area. He previously served as Director of the Institute for
Medical Research at the Chicago Medical School. lie received the
Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and Ph. D. degrees from Oxford
University, England. Membership expiration date is September 30, 1974.
Danny Thomas, Entertainer and television produceT. He is the founder
of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, a non-
profit research institution for the study of childhood cancer and other
catastrophic diseases and for basic research in the life sciences. Born
in Deerfield, Michigan in 1914, he holds a number of honorary degrees.
His term will expire in 5eptember of this year.
