These exposures resulted in inereas.dt lung •icrososwl ooeooxy6enasos and ornithins deearboxylass, lung DNA synthesis, lung protein, lung/body weight ratios, and numbers of sister ehroeatid exchanges in boAs nsrrou. bC3F1/ Cusiatice were fres of ll advontitious agents and were shown to bc a seusitivo model for the ehe.ieal induction of lunR ear- . einewsa (Cancer Ras. 41, in 9ross, 1941). Mico were exposed to ssnke or slvai S days%veek for 27 months. Over 1500 mice were evaluated. The only smoke induced lesion was an accumulation of pigmented alveolar .a:rophages. Incidence of spontaneous lung cancer (i.e., alveolar adenocareinomss) was tiSt. Ex- potare to /uwke failed to alter this tumor incidence. Sur- vivors post 27 months (tiS00) were allowed to live out their natural lifespan. No differences in probability of death from lung cancer were observed to smoke or sham exposed mice up to 36 oonths of age.
