CONZRACT 30
Last year contracts 14 and 22 were combined.
Contract 14 In Vivo and In Vitro Analyses of the Biological
Effects of Cigarette Smoke Related Chemicals.
Contract 22 Smoke Inhalation Carcinogenesis Studies in Mice.
A special comaittee on contracts was appointed by Dr. Soamers
and after a two day session the decision vas made to delete much of the
research on chemical transformation, carcinogenesis and mutagenesis and
emphasite the smoke inhalation studies and studies related to the effects
of smoke exposure on mice. A thirty month program of experimentation was
tentatively approved with a one year co~itment (September 1, 19?8 to
August 31, 1979).
The months of July and August 1978 were paid oa~ a pro rata extension.
The Contract Review Co~ittee, Dr. Feldman, Gardner, Jacobson,
Lynch, Meier and So~aers and C7R Stafl, met on December 21-22 to review
Qrogress.
. On April 4, 1979 Dr. Henry and Dr. Xo~ai, Microbiological Associa tes,
presented to the CTt Staff an updated progress report and a proposed modification.
The modification relates to increased consideration of means of making the
smoke eacposure experience less tra~atic. Animal restraint, breathiag restriction
and air loss will be investigated. The smoke exposure of animals given intra-
tracheal installations of a carcinogen or the carcinogen carrier -- dilute
gelatin saline kill even s®e 'bench' controls. Accidents contribute to
some deaths.
Section CTt-103 Was supplemented to this end without additional
f timQing.
Contract 30 THIS DOCUMENT SUBJECT T0 $1,170,000.00
