2. Smokin; Tcchniques
Dr. Sor~r,ers uas extrerely critical of the severity of thc crr.oi;ing
techniques; first, thc :urrcries on the tract:cas and then the iuscrtion of
plastic smoking tubes into the incisions no doubt were disturbing to the
ctogs. These conditions probably caused chronic infections, hemotrhaEtrg,
welling of tissues - just a whole host of traur..atic and da:+:aginb cxprrienccs.
It was rcpofted that the dogs were docile and friendly and appcared to enjoy
the snaktng. This is a miainterpretatton; in the desire to please, the dogs
covered iip the stress rnd trauma. In Dr. Sommers' opinion, the alleged
Eo-called ill effects of the smoking may be attributable to ths stress and
traums. The other r,edical people agreed with Dr. Sor.n,ers.
3. Exam(nation of Presumatal Cancerous Tissues
In the several presentations which Dr. Auerbach has made regarding
the experiments, he has shown slides of what he maintains are cancerous
tissues. Tn medical terms these are referred to as squamous cell carcino.ma.
In Dr. Sorrmer's' opinion, the photographic quality of the slides is unbelievably
poor. He could not understand why Dr. Auerbach could not have employed the
rcadily available prof-ssional skill for the preparation of the slides. Purely
on the basis of the quality of the slides, the interpretation is c.cani^gless,
i.e., if the work is to be judged on the slides, then Dr. Aucrbach's c:erk is
vorthlcss.
Under any circumstances, only one of the slides suggests a carcinoma.
None of the others could be regarded as cancerous.
Dr. Soc-ners assucncs that it is because of the poor quality cf the
slides that the JouiTal of the A.merican Medical Association has f:r.ally
rejected Dr. Aucrbach's paper. However, the paper is scheduled to appear
in ARC1iI1'ES OF EXl'IRO':'!ENTAI HEALTH, Vol. 21, No. 6, Deccr-.5cr 1470.
