Research Com.nittee, today issued the following coc®ent on the HeesmQnd-Horn
statistical report:
"The causes of cancer and heart disease are not yet knovn to medi-
cal science. Today's Hamaoyi-37orn statistical statement, like their pre-
vious reports, does nothing to change this fact. Also, as scientists ha.e
stated, the study itself is open to criticisme as to methodology, selection
of subjects, and unsupported aas=G?tions.
"Statisticel stvdies often have an important role in research. Their
fumction, hovever, is to suggest possible areas for further and aore definitive
investigation using experimental techniQues. They do not prove eause-snd-effeet
relationships.
"The Tobacco Industry Research Committee still shares the videly-held
position that the basic origns of cancer sad heart disease vill eventually
be leasned by careful laboratory and clinical study, not through statistical
reports that are subject to difiering interpretations fsroan the innumrable
variables involved.
"The Tobacco Industry Research Cemmittee vill continue its suyyort of
