JevelopeJ cancer of the larynx IBI.RNFCLI) and HUMNURCiCR. 1978; HoM
xuRCLR er al.. 1978).
At lower smoke concentrations but with similar exposure parameters.
a smaller percenta8e of the animals developed larynx cancer in proportion
to the dose of smoke to which they were exposed. When exposed to smoke
from cigarettes made ofthe tobaccosubstitute (Cytrel' )t, none of the animals
developed cancer. When hamsters were exposed to smoke from cigarettes
containing 50. 80 and 100ie tobacco. the incidence of larynx cancer caused
by the smoke was proporttonate to the amounts or tobacco in the cigarette.
Dettrrption oJ PoJte.
The poster shown at this symposium illustrated some or these obser.a
tions and further demunstrated the histogenesis of the type or lary~gra
cancer whtch, in susceptrble hamsurs, is caused by cigarette smoke It also
showed that the dtsease induced in these experimental an,mals is htstolog,
cally tJcnural to human IarynBeal cancer (liy. 1-1?1.
Cort(lutirurt
An experimental method is now available for comparative studies or
cigarettes and as a guide toward less hazardous smoking materials.
Smoke inhalation in susceptible inbred Syrian hamsters results in car-
cinoma of the Iaryn:, which is histologically identical to human laryngeal
carcinoma. which eptdemtuloEtcally has been pro.en to be associated -itn
smoking.
