V. 1uu2'2 Augus t 30, 1973 Dr. Freddy Hom~)urger RFD #1 DLlsworth, idaine 04605 Again we are obliged to you for taking time from your vacation on August 16 to discuss with Ed and me the technical bulletin on Inhalation Stuaies °vith Cigarette S::o;e. Your surgestion that this bulletin be abandoned is very tatisfactory to us. We understand that it will be replaced henceforth in dis- tributions, by copies of your paper Rilmonary iiisto_pattiology of Naasters T=osed to Smoke as presented to the Society of Toxicology on t4arch 21, 1973, together vith a cover ing letter that you rril]l draft. While -ve will have to review this draft for reasons that have been ~ :ply discussed, there is no ur,ency in the natter apart fra-t our wish to avoid ~ Lny delay t%at =ay be of concern to you. Your sug;estioa for utilizing the Pnerican Society for Testing Nater'a:s in establishing star.d3rds for exposure of eaperi.-te:~ta1 a.^.i_als to the inhalation of tobacco smoke has been discussed extensively here anong the scientific staff and various associates. There is a very strong consensus t^.at the ti:e is noz ripe for this. As you know, we have intensive and exiens:ve prosrams under way to describe the operation of several existi^3 machines, quantitatively, in te:-is of physical and c'.^.e-_ical properties of snoke as actually delivered into the respiratory trees of various animal species and strains a=d the deposition in fario«s :arts cf the syster. Ln about a year there should be a great deal more inforaation available for contribution to a discussion of star.dards. All this is be made public, but we wish to reserve decisions abolit the exact time and ha.incr of presentation. All our collaborators in this joint effort are, to the est of my knoWledge, in accord with the program. Until it has been carried throu&h, the role that might be played by the ASMd remains unclear and we would connections. e slad to see their whole plan deferred for at least a year. ~ I have tried to reach you by telephone several times to report at irst hand upon our discussions of this matter but have not succeeded in making Very sincerely yours, H:gh Robert C. :!ockett, Ph.D. Z• Jacob .~ Research Director [.,r f i'c. f f N 0422427
