Cazt~~(•t~4 ~s13 Mtgust 30, 1973 Dr. Preddy fiamburger RY'J #1 F.llsvortb, Maine 04605 Dear ?reddye Again we are obliged to you for taking tLoe froe your vacation on August 16 to discuss with Ld and me the technical bulletin on Inhalation Studies with Cigarette Smoke. 'tour suggestion that this bulletin be a oned is very satisfactory to ns. We understand that it vill be replaced henceforth in dis- tributions, by copies of your paper Pula_onat rHist~+athol- of eiamsters Hx osed to Smoke as presented to the Society of Toxicology on Marcl ?S-,together xith a covering let:er that you vill draft. rihile we will have to review this dreSt for rusons that have been amply discussed, there is no urgency in the sntter apart from our wish to avoid any delay that may be of concern to you. Your suggestion for utilizing the American Society for Testing Materials in establishing standards for etposure of experimental animals to the inhalation of tobacco smoke has bean discussed extensively bare among the scientific staff and various associates. There is a very strong consensus that the time is not ripe for this. As you know, we have intensive and e=tensive prograss under way to describe the operation of several existing machines, quantitativaly, in teras of physical and chessical properties of smoke as actaally delivered into the respirato:y trees of various anissal species and strains and the deposition in various parts of the system. In about a year there should be a great deal more information available for contribution to a diseuseion of standards. All this is to be made public, but we rish to reserve decisions about the exact time and manner of presentation. All our collaborators in this joint effort are, to the beet of my knowledge, in accord rith the program. Llotil it bu been carried tlrougb, the role that might be played by the A891 resains unclear and we rould be glad to see their vbole plan deferred for at least a year. I have tried to reach you by telephone se.eral tisee to report at first band upon our discussions of this matter but have not succeeded in naking connections. Very sincerely yours, RCH:gh Robert C.
