A-4 0-7%i June 3, 1974 Dr. Freddy Bcnbiager President and Director Bio-Reietrch.Conaultanta, Inc. 9 Cc®excial Avenue Casbsiege, lisssaahusetts 02141 Dear Freddy: The m"^•+"cript, Cigarette :boke Inhalation Stadies in Inbred Syrian Han.eters by P. Bernfeld, F. Ficmburger and A. B. Russfield, prepared for the Battelle Seattle Symposium oa imental Re ira Carcin enesis and Bioess June 23 - 27, haa been revie+rod by oua staff and consultants. C~ Contract Eo. 5. A composite of the suggestions and coraaenta received follovs: *1. Table I, first footnote. It is suggested that the last three words be deleted since "sicroinrasiye cancer" is not mentioned elsewhere in the text or legends for figures, nor in the vpinion of the reviewers, is it supported by examination of the illustrations. 2. Page 2, line 8. The e=posure of six a"imal sisaltaneoa+ly is mentioned. It should be borne in mind that the doaage of smoke received by an individual eniaal may be affected "jy the number being exposed, on account of differences in the rate of saoke chamber de;kletion and dilution of the cham- ber contents by COp aod other exhaled pcodncte. 3. Page 2, line 21. Smoke dilution factor. It should be made clear that the dilution factor is an estisate on1y. Leakage, speed and efficiency of mixing saoYe and air and other factors may introduce inaccuracies. Only direct aeasurement under operating conditions can give a highly reliable figtre for concentration of amoYe at the point of iaSalatioa. 4. Page 3, line 2. This estlnate of smoke concentration received by humaan amakers is a plausible estimate rhich probabl, lies within the range, but it nast be recognized that iadl.idual variations are quite large and there is no established •arasage" based on obserrations. 5. 1 -2- 6. Page 9, line 9. it is suggested that the phrase "eonsistent vitb carcincaa" be deleted as noa-contributory. #7. Page 12, first paragraph. Until the relative dosages of ssote received respectively into various parts of the respiratasT tracts of the Bio 15.16, Bio 87.20 and other strains have actnally been seasured, it setns hazardous to coaclude that differences in laryngeal response aust be due to differbaees in tisnss susceptibility. Strain differences in Dalnonary mechaaics such as tidal roluse, minute voalusie, respiratary rate and erpecisl.ly ability and inclin- ation to suspend respiration could affect s:oYe dosages in parti- cular areas. 8. 'iypographical notes: Page 1, line 2. "Because" rather than "siace". Page 2, line 1. American u.age (as eontraeted to Baritish) is to spell alumiaun vithovt an i before n. With due consideration of these ccmxnts, ve fiad no objection to yoia publication of this paper in an;y reputable scientific medi:a on the usua.l seientific responsibility of the authors.
