Jacob, •Jacob, Hedinger d Finnegan, 45 Rockefeller Plaza, Now York, N.Y. 10020, U.S.A. Dear Ed, . I would like in this letter to tell you the status of our special project 98, which, as you may recall, was authorized by W.T. Hoyte in a letter of May 2nd, 1978. The research suggested therein has been carried out, both here and in Italy, and a good deal of interesting material has been produced. because of the growth of the size of our twin register we.have continued data collection over a.longer period than originally envisaged, particularly as the number of discordant pairs of twins was not large in the original sample, •nd ire therefore still busy with the finalisation of the data analysis. When this is completed I will of course write a report and ssnd it to you.- We have used the occasion to add a fair number of pairs of twins to our register, both young and middle aged ones, and the register is now in very good shape and probably the biggest in the United Kingdom. It'became very clear qu'ite neaY the beginning of the work that it is impossible by questionnaire to pinpoint the dates when certain important stress-producing events happened, and when people increased or decreased , their smoking habits. To do so would require individual interviews, .and this could not be done at the time as the4ost voyld greatly have exceeded the grant, and as we thought it better to complete the study in its original form, and then add individual intervi.ews later on, if possible. I would like to suggest, therefore, that the C.T.R. be opproached for additional support to interview a selected portion of the total sample (e.g. particularly twins discordant for smoking). This would be one important reason for carrying out the interview study. • In addition, an equaLly important reason would be that in this way we could gather a lot more information about smoking patterns, attempts to give up smoking, reasons for smoking, etc. Such data are almost impossible to .- obtain by questionnaire, and they would contribute a great deal to the understanding of genetic relationships and also reasons for taking up smoking. In dcsirning the investigation we would of course have the benefit of the experience gained in the Spielberger investigation. . O . I have estimated the cost to be something like per annum for L ' a period of two years, with possibly a smaller sum for t e third year of C.) analysis to pay someone to run it all through the eomputer.•. Individual ~ interviewing is always expensive because of travelling costs, difficultiesW of arranging intcrviews except in the evenings, and the high quality of .~ interviewers required to make the exercise a success. This grant would also help us maintain the twin retister in its enlaried form for another two or three years; in the pre'sent financial s3tustion of Universities in this country I can sce co way of getting =v ' - With a11 best wishes, ~~ roncy froo them to do this. Yours, H.J. Lysenck COHFIDEtTIA1 ., 0 0 . . . CTR HN 1J. 2B55 1
