0 1 THIS DOCU'+CvT S' !gIECT TO CONFIDEhi,~_.if A~rZEE"dENT. Report to CTR Annual Meeting,'Jan. 31, 1975 1974 seemed to have been a'good year comparatively in terms of some favorable press attention to smoking and health and also to the CTR program. I'm not sure I can explai.n why. Perhaps the best reason is that we had some helpful material from CTR it- self as well as from non-CTR projects. Yhenever possible we've sought to =et attention to objective scientific reports. You know this is something I've stressed continuously. It's fortunate that last year we had the coopera- tion and understandin= of some researchers i.n efforts to pub- licize their findings. 1. Seltzer's paper last spring on effect of smoking in:low- ering blood pressure was reported on the front page of the Chicago Daily News and moved on CDN nevswire. • 3. A CTR srantee last month had an article in an A?i1, journal that did not credit CTR for support. The article was brought to the attention of certain writers who were told of CTR's sponsorship. There was some follow-up on my part and the •cience writer of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette intervieved the scientist and wrote a nice piece. There was a smaller story in the Pittsburgh Press and I am hopeful we'll get some further attention. ® 4 75 CTR HN 02-8504 !

, 0 2. Ti IS CCl", Y .ONFiDENTIAL1i I ~,A «'itE,1 i, Following the two SAB meetings last year, we issued releases on fu,nded trants, localizing them for home town papers wherever possible. Pickup has been fairly good. Henry has entioned the Cancer Letter story. We've also had pickup in the San Francisco Chronicle and the Miami Herald -- and I have copies here for any- one who'd like to see them. As you know. I maintain a good and close relationship with TI. An oustanding example of this liaison occurred some months ago when I learned UPI had gotten three signed articles from an ACS press writer on the subject of women and smoking. The UPI editor assigned to edit and handle the series -- an old friend -- asked 1b^ some advice. She said ACS had exerted'considerable pres- sure at the top level of UPI and though she did not want to run the series, she had been told to do so. I asked if a"courter" series would be okay, she got approval for the idea, and I put her in contact with Bill Kloepfer. The result, as you know, was a nice three-part series by Anne Duffin that UPI moved with the ACS material. I wish we could have more such opportunities. And just last week I cam across something in a specialized journal I get that related to something I knew TI.was involved with. I immediately sent it down and it's been put to good use by Horace. I attended about a dozen meetings during the year, reporting on them to CTR, and a few are worth mentioning. 1. Int. Cancer Congress in Rome, October, loaded with anti- smoking reports. One, from Dan Horn, was reported in this country by a Hearst newspaper reporter. As usual, I dis- cussed the smoking-health material with the American press there, especially in regard to the old material being presented by Hammond, Vynder, etc. American press attendance was quite limited and so was attention to the smoking-health papers. The cor- respondent for both AP and Medical Tribune was told of the bird migration-lung cancer paper and he filed that with some good pickup. 2. The twin congress in Rome was rather fascinating to me personally and I think my report on it was helpful the CTR sci- entific steff. One favorable story, on the Swedish twin work, ~~N 476 CTR HN 0128MOS i
