Street New York, New York Dear Dr. Parmele : lt was indeed a pleasure visiting with you at your office recently in order-- to discuss the subject of catalysis. 'ile have reviewed with our technical staff the problem of exactly which catalysts to supply you for your experi- mental work on cigarette manufacture. Based on this discussion, we zrill shortly for:rard to your attention (on a no-charge basis) one pound each of the follo•.ring four species of catalysts : SD 150 type alumina 5% platinum on SD 150 type alumina 5~ palladium on SD 150 type alumina 5'~ rhodium on SD 150 type alumina _ We suggest that approximately h0 milligrams of a single catalyst be dispersed throughout each individual cigarette. This can probably best be done by blending each catalyst with a batch of the identical tobacco prior to manu- facturing the individual cigarettes. Comparisons of the smoking test results on the fabricated cigarettes made with these catalysts can be compared with the data obtained from a blank run in which no catalyst was employed. We are quite hopeful that an evaluation of the data obtained from the five series of tests will demonstrate the efficacy of the precious-metal catalysts in lower- ing the tar content, the 3,11-benzpyrene content and the carbon monoxide con- concentration in the smoke. . Ye appreciate your }:ind offer of acquainting us with the test data. We, of course, will be pleased to advise on your experiments and, if the results ap- pear promising, suggest and surply additional catalyst3 for your further experimentation. Very truly yours, E?wSLW?tD I1:D"JSTRItiS, INC. BS/ea COPY PLAINTiFF'S IBIT ~_or .u,.,n u+K n,... on t... TR 1 t N 028409
