Vol. 4, No. 30, September 26, 1978 * * * SPECIAL EDITION * * * LIGGETT RESPONDS TO PRESS REPORT ON NEW TOBACCO R°_SEARCH As it was reported in the press today, Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company has received a U.S. patent covering the development of a catalytic prociss which when applied to tobacco reduces the biological activity of smoke condensate on the backs of mice in laboratory experi:nents. The report gave the misleading impression that Liggett & Myers, in its patent, made the admission of a link between sr,lokinc and cancer. Liggett has made no such admission; the fact is that for more than two decades scientific researchers have produced tumors on mouse skin by t-he application of enormous dosages of smoke condensate. Neither the industry nor Liggett has denied these results. Liggett a::: the cigarette industry continue to deny, as they have consistently, that any conclusions can be drawn relating such test results on mice in laboratories to cancer in human beings. It has never been estaSlis` that smoking is a cause of human cancer. The laboratory experiments reported in t-he patent were conducted for Liggett by an independent researcher, The Life Sciences Divisicn of Arthur D. Little, Inc. # t i FC- b':'::4w-74 LPLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT ~OfT .~i sr~ n ~a.a su.v~. co `` t ti` ~G. C~~~"~ CTR
