A full day of discussion elicited
a number of practical suRRcslitms for
rclevant investip,ations.
It seemed to he the ennsensus that while atherrnekroeis Icnds in general
to rrcdisrnce to inlarclion, there are many cases of advanced atheroulerosis
in which infarctinn is never ohurved, while arnversely infarctitm may take
place in cases where relatively little atheroselerosis is present Morenvcr,
infarcliun often occurs without evidence of Ihrombus formation and vice
versa. l he hope of pinpointing any pnssibk contributory effcct of nicntine
or other specific agent thus seems dependent upon hettcr elucidation (if Ihe
mechanisms by which infarcti(xt eventuates.
One new study of thrombus formation in vitro has suhccqucnlly been
approved, another is under eonsidcratavn, nd additional suggcstions are
still being received.
Sufnequenl to the conference on the pathogenesis of infarclinn, a pre
liminary report was released from a nine-year Councilaupfxorled study to
determine whether the degree of arterial sclerosis found on autopcy of acci-
tknt viclirns would show any correlation with their smoking pracliccs. A
positive correlation was reported.
Snxtkcrc and nnn-srnokers, however, are knnwni to differ significantly
in their relative practice of alher life habits that might influence arterittcclern
sis 7 hey are also strongly suspected of differing significantly in ctmetilutinnal
makeup and hasic physiology.
