Ten cases of research proposals were considered, of which four were encouraged to apply for grants and five were discouraged. 2. Dr. Gardner re viewed the status of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Microbiological Associates contracts. He told of the meeting held in Bethesda by the subcommittee of the Scientific Advisory Board and of subsequent negotiations that had been conducted resulting therefrom. He explained that the two contracts with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Union Carbide) had been negotiated in accordance with the subcommittee's views as one contract for $205,000 -- a substantial reduction in cost. He said similar negotiations are still under+ray with Microbiological Associates which will result in combining two contracts into one with new protocols, also in keeping with the views of the Scientific Advisory Board subcommittee on contracts, at a reduced total cost of about $1,100,000. The negotiated contracts as outlined in detail by Dr. Gardrer were approved and will be reported to the Board at its October meeting. It was also agreed that the Scientific Director and staff personnel will make a site visit quarterly and that the Board subcommittee will meet to review the contracts semiannually. 3. The following application, deferred at the April 1978 SAB meeting, was reco=nended for approval subject to the determination by the Scientific Director as to pricrity and the amount to be funded: 2204 Allan C. The following application, denied at the April 1978 SAB meeting and re-presented - in a modified foras both as to protocol and budQet, was recosended for approval subject to the determination by the Scientific Director as to priority and the asount to be funded: 1169 Gerald Shklar, D.D.S., M.D. =44,789.00 S. The following proposal was rated for disapproval: 1066R1S David W. Crtffipacker, Ph.D. =16,S09.00 6. The Secretary was requested to set the winter a+eeting for a.pproxiautely February 8-9, 1979 at a site of his selection, preferably in Florida. 7. Subsequent to the meeting the Scientific Director determined that the following, referred to in paragraphs 3 and 4, should be funded in the respective amunts indicated: 120: Allan C.
