Dr. Little gave a thorough description of the research program with particular em.phasis on its char.oinc nature as time passes. He described the difficulties at the beRinning of the prog'am in obtaining applicants and in plecinP work where it would be most productive, how this r.ad evolved gradually and gracefully, until current activities reflect the i=pleuntation of the design as planr.ed. He pointed out hovever that, as in all matters cf this sort, certain research which was proving unproductive had to be cancelled while other grants should be expanded because of their desirability and usefulness. He outlined Advisory Board plans for the futu.-e in accordance with the reouest which he had made for additioral furds in April, explaining that although implementation of this would take time he was pushing as ouickly as possible to get it thoroughly u.^.dervay. Ee told of the resignation of Dr. Julius Co=oe from the Sc:enti°ic Advisory Board, which had occurred because of the pressures of b.is work and a change in affiliation from Pennsylvania to California vhich caused added geog*aphical difficulties in attendi.ne meetings. -- Dr. Little exYlained that it was inevitable the Board would recuire replacements at some not too distant date and that plans were being made to meet this. . He covered the major speeches which he had made during 1960, as well as meetings with the princi2.al science writers. 6. Dr. Hockett described the prog: ess of the research program. He showed how hints of virus involverent in producing bror.chitis in s=ke-in'r.al_ ng m.ice had led to an extension of Dr. Leucatenberger 's studies in to experi- mental lung virss infections in r...~ce. Tt:e accu-.ilation of clues see_in_ :., involve viruses in cancer has also led to a new project under L_-. :Qarti.^n at Seton F.all and to the develcpreat of plans for new studies under Dr. u.:r r sy at Bar Earbor. Following a conference on the effects of previous infections and lung scars as precursors of lung cancer, in vhich Dr. Walter Fir.ke and Dr. Douglas Sprunt had participated, new studies have been developed under Dr. Rier.hoff and Dr. Lau..^enzi. Ee shoved how studies of peptic ulcer have failed to yield any inflica- tion of direct effects of tobacco use on the digestive secretions, and hov this finding has placed new emprasis on the possibility that ulcer occurs in persons of certain personality types who mey also tend to be relatively heavy smokers. Increased emphasis on constitutional and "persorality" factors in disease and in smoking has resulted. Studies by Drs. Zagiuri, Domino, Thomas, Seltzer, McArthlur and Dibner have been undertaken or extended to explore these possibilities., The apparently beneficial effects of smoking on canker sores were mentioned and progress in study of carcinogenesis assay methods as well as new progress in the classification of lung tu.:.cr s by cell type.
