With respect to this i.ncreased activity, hovever, two po'r.ts shcu'_d be recog::zed: 1. A large propor tion of the attacks aga*.--st sncking rAde recently, expected to continue in the next feW r.onts, orig' zte v_tc, the sr=e s: e11 of critics who have led the arti-tobacco ro•: es of t:..e past ttiro or three yea: s. 2. Neither the press nor the public see=s to be react's.g with any nct:=e- able fear or a.la.zm to the receat attacics. This outlook does not warrant any attitude of corplacency in cur publ.c relations approach, es-r.ecia'y y when we cons.der v'rBt co•.id be the i~^r,act cn tne public of a possible announce=ent (which has been r,:nored) by researchers e.:- legiag that they have isola:ed and identified a esrc:ncgen in tobacco. THIS DOCUMENT SUBIECT TO AUG. 20, 1985 N0N-DISSEMlNAtION ORDER IN R,- OGERS AHD DUKE CAEI of Dra. Little and Heckett, steps a..re being worked out to give doctors and sci- entists greater knowledge of the scope, coaposition and nature of the progrP.:.. Meanwhile, thn TIRC continues increasi.^giy to benefit frthe leadersha which Dr. Little, Dr. Rockett and the members of the Sl3 are providing. Dr. - Little's forthcoming editorial and speeches vill be a further contribution to the prestige of twe TIRC research program. The Recent Months A factor that has become more noticeable since the last TIRC neeting is that, more and mc.r e, dcc•.ors and scientists are voluntarily speaking up at .:.ed- ical meetings to express disagreement with the flat charges made against to- bacco. They do not exonerate tobacco but say that the case against smok:=g Las not been proved and that much more evidence is needed. Another aspect that also is bec -ing more apparent is the greater e=p:zs:s being placed by scientists :.n this country and abroad on the role of air po'?u-n tion as the major cause of l-.ing cancer. Two recent scientific repor:s on air pollution and hee.i:h received national newspaper attent:on. The subject is be- is-g treated by the press. as a new, interesting and iW-portant phase ci' the over- a11 sit•.;ation. Meanwhile, reports adverse to tobacco from two major sources, which pre- viously rece=ved =ac^ purlicity, were largely ig-nore3 by the press i.Y recent months because of their appereYt tailur e to contribute anythin g per t': ent or di_*: erent to the problem. In Engh.d the situation as regards the press appears to be quite differ- ent than that i.^ this ccxntry. T::ere =s frequent and i:cr eas::.g mention of at- tacks on smok`~g in the British press. The Future Smoking and health viil be the subject of ms,y papers and syLposia at scientific aeetin gs the next seve=al aonth_s. SoWe of the papers v: Ll' be given by =RC grar.tees; cne of whom is scheduled to present an exhibit er.d pa:er at three medical meetiags. Several g:-antees 'rBve submitted papers on their re- search findi.^.gs to date for pablication in professional journals. Reports by grantees, vhrt•her th-ey are made at meetings or appear in scien- titic journals, may lead t•c requests froa the press for coa-.ent by TIRC. Re- gardless of u•rAt the rep•'rts say, TIRC intends only to restate its guarantee of ccmplete scientific freedom to those vho•have received, and vill receive, re- sea: ch grants. Such act ion vill enhance the acceptability and sincer ity of TIRC's research program with the scientific world and the public at large. Several TIRC grantees already have presented papers at sepnrate medical meetings but none received any press mention. Meetings at which smoking and health are expected to be discussed: 1. Tre latter pla^n has been d:oyped, at least for the present. Other factors of public relations interest to ;'Z1C are Dr. Little's fcrth- coair.g report (in 2•ay) on the progress and accosplishrents of the research Yr:- gran, the talks he vill give at three medical meetings and the edao: a_ he as vritten for CAi;C-lrR R5EUCE, official publlcation of the American Associetion for Cancer Rese-a-rch. Cancer Month April has been designated "Cancer Month" and during the next few months the American Cancer Society vil: conduct an active canaaign to achieve its gca:' of $26,000,000. The build-up has been apparent in recent veeks: 1. An article on lung carcer and smoking by Dr. Charles Cameron, the ACS' medical and scientific director, appeared in the January issue of Tri:.
