Introduction i : The third edition of Rucarch Paper No. 6 brings up to datc the information about total tobacco consumption in va=ious countries which aru published in the second edition in 1968. In preparing a third edition of this Research Papcr, attempts were made to incrcase the coverage of the rcport by writing to the appropriate authorities in a numbcr of countries not indudcd in nrlicr editions, but these approaches met with very limited success. It has, how- cvcr, bcen possiblc to indude information for one country, nundy Morocco, which was not in previous editions. The table relating to Rhodesia hss been omitted because no more recent information than that published in the first and second edidons of the Rcscarch Papu has btcomc available. Whcrcver appropriate, the opportunity has been taken to revise figures in the light of more recent information. Ggsrctte and dgar consumption are shown both in numbczs and in pounds weight. Wherc the numbcrs of cigarettes consumed were not available, the cigarette consumption in taillions has been calculated from the consumption in pounds weigh;, for each country, by using a standasd convcrsion factor of a•aof lbs. pes t,ooo except where otherwise stated. For cigars and cigarillos, various convccsion factors ranging up to t 8•6 lbs. per z,ooo havc been used according to the proportion of cigarillos and the type of dg2rs smoked in each country. The population figures have been obtained either from the publications of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation or from omcizl sources in the co;r.u of o: gin. The Tobacco Rcscarc.h Council is grateful to Brlash :Amcrican Tobacco Co. Ltd and their Associated Companies overseas for providing much of the information published in this Resca:ch Paper. other figures have bcen provided by Government Dcpar=erts and by the tobacco ti-ide in the various countries concerned and the Council is gntcfiil for the concnucd co-opcration of these organisations in making their statistics of tobacco consumption aT-a.il- able for publication.
