Dear Dr. McAlister:
I can't tell you how much it means to me to have your warm
friendship and wise counsel. Each time we have visited you have
really helped me put scme of my thoughts about Webb-Waring's
research into perspective.
As you can well imagine, Dr. Repine was very disappointed that he
and his team of scientists were not funded this year by The
Council for Tobacco Research. Nevertheless, he does understand,
as we all do, that he has been fortunate in having six wonderful
years of support from you, and that there will be other oppor-
tunities for him in the future.
John and I had a nice chat about the ccamnents from the Council
members concerning his research, and I believe this information
will be most helpful to him in his work.
In the meantime, I am hopeful that Dr. Norbert Voelkel will be
successful in achieving support frcan CTR. He is a very dedicated
scientist and the members of his team are enthusiastic and
capable.
We are all looking forward to a return visit from you and Dr.
Ford in 1987. Meanwhile, many good wishes go with this letter.
