THE CoUNCiL FOR TosACCO RESEARCH-U.S.A., INC. Memorandum To: Dr. J.F.Glenn and Staff From: D.H.Ford Re: Site visit with Dr. M. Nahm, Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 29, 1990 Grant No. 1902AR1 entitled "Development of human B cells." Goal: To determine how the germinal center production of B-cells is regulated and promoted in relation to the dendritic cells and T-cells within a lymph node. Results: The schema diagramed.below more or less illustrates the relationship between dendritic, B and T cells which Dr. Nahm's data is suggesting. Thus, the sum of 11-4 in conjunction with a growth factor from the dendritic cells (binding to a CD40 receptor on the B-cell) initiates B-cell proliferation and facilitates the of memory induced by an antigen. The IgE appears to act in to serve in a feedback regulatory manner. 11-2 is depicted on the dendritic cells. .Th 1) Fnr LL ~ . creation SomeWay as acting Since submitting his renewal, sections II and III of the series entitled"Clonal Characterization of the human IgG antibody repertoire to Haemophilus influenzae TYPE B polysaccharide'have appeared in print. Two other manuscripts have also been submitted for publication. "Clonal characterization of the human IgG antibody repertoire to H.influenzae type B polysaccharide, part IV."~I and Characterization of the human IgG antibody VL repertoire..etc. Comment: Dr. Nahm is a young enthusiastic investigator pursuing what appears to me to be a very exciting program. In view of recent reports indicating the need for muscarinic and adrenergic innervation of the thymus to provide for normal maturation of T cells, one might wonder if a similar innervation is of importance in lymph nodes or Peyer's patches. With the latter, the peptidergic neuronal relationships in this area described by Gershon might also be of interest. With the thymus, the autonomic neuronal input has been demonstrated to have its effect by other than a control of blood flow, presumably acting- on parenchymal elements. Perhaps the same might be true in these other lymphatic elements. This continues to be an active program with continuing progress in an area of interest to CTR.. DHF
