CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY Dr. George Hashim The Council for Tobacco Research USA 900 Third Avenue New York, NY 10022 August 9, 1995 Re: "Environmental and genetic factors in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders: Influences and interactions, Martinique, French West Indies, October 5-11, 1996° Dear Dr. Hashim, My co-organizers and I request the support of the Council for Tobacco Research USA for this scientific.meeting to.:take.place inMartinique in the Fall of 1996.' This symposium will gatherr together approximately 150 neuroscientists from around the world to present current research findings and clinical issues in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. As you know,: smoking has been found to be protective against the develoopment of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. A special seminar at the meeting will be devoted to this topic. Presentations of research data and their critical evaluation and clinical implications will be emphasized. The meeting will be fully bilingual with simultaneous translation in French and English. This symposium will be the fourth of its kind. Three previous ones took place in Ochos Rios, Jamaica in 1993, 1994, and 1995. The 1993 and 1.994 meetings were discussed in an article published in Amyloid: International Journal of Experimental and Clinical Investigation, 1:206- 210, 1994 (enclosed). The papers presented at the 1994 meeting were published in Molecular Neurobiology 9:1-208, 1994.., This meeting has been granted sponsorship by the Conseil General de la-Martinique, the Conseil Regional de la Martinique, the Fonds de Cooperation Regional, Caraibes-Guyane, and the World Federation of Neurology, Research Group on Dementia. It will be held with a satellite meeting of the Caribbean Brain Research Organization (CARIBRO). The move of the meeting from Jamaica to Martinique; the participation of Antilles-Guyane,University and of CARIBRO coincide with the desire to 1) open the meeting to neuroscientists from French and Spanish speaking regions of the world and 2) place more emphasis on pathology prevailing in the Caribbean. - We believe that the international exposur'e of this meeting will be a valuable resource for your organization. We will be gr.ateful for, support of travel and lodging expenses. . Scientists and managers of the Council for Tobacco-Research USA-will be rnast welcome. -You should alsoconsider having a scientific or industrial exhibit. We look forward to hearing from you.
