Dear Doctor Hockett:
Fnclosed is the Application for Research Grant Whi.ch Dr. DuPuie trug-
;geated I submit to you. The problem which initiated thinking along
the lines Indicated in this application was the behavior of certain
p<^.rticlee in the eame range of particle eize as is found in smoke.
Certain populations of these particles remained in the lung after
touching the moiet mucosal or alveolar surfacea. Othero were rejec•
tef1. as a;fuaatioza of tisae by ciliarry action, etc. There itr consid-
erable prewtmtptive evidence to indicate that the primary difference
is in the electrical surface cha,ra ge on the particxee.
Since ours is a relatively new institution (founded in March 19}4)p
I thought It might be of intereert to rome members of your Board that
xe are a nonprofitp tax-exempt institution specifically committed in
the area of fundamental research in medicine.
On Monday I must leave for Paris to attend an International Symposl.vaa
on the Reticuloendothellal System. After thilt# I vill lecture at
several Daaropettn un#.vereities, but I plan to be back early in July.
Should there be any queeti.one j please feel free to call on me.
Sincerely yourso
John H. He7.ler, M.D.
