Cohen SUBJECT: Second renewal application, #550AMR2, from Dr. John E, Craighead We:,enclose an expected second renewal application from Dr. Craighead to continue studies of Epithel3.al Cell Transformation and Carcinoma Induction by itCfr Type RNA Viruses. Dr. Craighead was the recipient of a three-year gran't, #550, covering the time span between January 1., 1967 and December 31, 1969, for studies on the Biological and Cytopathic Effects of Respiratory and Oncogenic Viruses in Organ Cultures of Human Respiratory Tract Tissue. Toward the end of 19 9, Dr. Craighead submitted an application for continuation of his work along similar lines. This was denied without prejudice and conferences instituted to see whether his studies could be targeted more specifically toward the Boardts interest in I'C" type RNA virus problems and particularly toward the problem of carcinoma production by such viruses. A modified research plan was proposed after a three-month extension of'Grant #550 and approved for activation on April l, 1970. This modified grant, #55oAM, was submitted as a three-year plan and approved with the anticipation of priority consideration for that period; this plan was renewed as of April 1, 1971 at $26,517.. The starting date for this application is given as April 1, 1972. The budget request is $28,703. in accordance with the identical figure for 1972 in the original budget projection.
